Civic Media Cookbook

How would you explain “civic media” to someone who’s never heard the term? While the News Futures charter lays out our collective goals, where people often get stuck is explaining what the work looks like in practice, and how it differs from traditional journalism and other forms of storytelling. To translate the News Futures Charter into an accessible, growing set of living examples for those interested in advancing civic health and information, we landed on the framing of a cookbook. By breaking down the components of civic media “recipes” — think: the ingredients, the techniques, the variations, the “nutritional value” — we hope to help more people understand what civic media is and how to make it themselves.
